Warnings About Watching the Holy Ghost Movies

Holy Ghost Movies

Movies about the Holy Ghost might seem good, but not when these movies come close to blaspheming God. My question is, “Can the Holy Spirit really direct a movie or would He even do such a thing?” It is highly presumptuous of anyone to say that God has directed this movie and that it’s a work of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit. Their website claims that the director is not really the director, as “Director Darren Wilson continues his journey around the world in his quest to make a movie that is completely led by the Holy Spirit.” [1] Does this man claim to know what God the Holy Spirit will do or wants him to do and which scenes should appear in the spontaneous making of this movie!? They don’t need or study a script ahead of time, believing the Holy Spirit will let them know when it’s time, but can he or anyone rightly claim the Holy Spirit is directing something like this, especially considering there are several doctrinal errors in the movies? The short answer is, “No!”

The Documentaries

The Holy Ghost movies started with Holy Ghost, a 2014 American Christian documentary, and as documentaries go, they can be highly subjective because they rely on people’s experiences. Jesus said the Holy Spirit will show the disciples truth (John 8:31-36), I doubt that meant making movies down the line. The Holy Spirit’s role is not that of a director or writer of a movie about Himself! This movie is more about what people experienced, not what the Bible says. The Holy Spirit always testifies of Jesus and does not bring attention to Himself; rather He points us to Christ (John 15:26). The film consists of interviews with religious figures as well as musicians, all speaking about the ways “their faith” informs their work or the miracles they have witnessed, but never mentioned is the all-important message of the Bible. Jesus said we must repent and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15), and we are to proclaim the gospel to everyone (Matt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8), but these testimonies are about people’s experiences is highly subjective at best, and why do they not mention sin and God’s abiding wrath upon all who reject Christ, so there are far too many biblical doctrines omitted (i.e., Acts 4:12, 16:30-31).

The Holy Ghost

Why isn’t the gospel even proclaimed in the movie if it’s about the Holy Spirit? That’s a great question, isn’t it? The Holy Spirit opens our minds to understand the Bible and then point us to Jesus Christ and our need for the Savior. What good is telling people about the miracles people have experienced without telling them about the Man…the God-Man, Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:1-5)? We believe in miracles, yes, but we trust in Christ! We are not saved by hearing about people’s miracles. In one pathetic scene, an atheist is supposedly convinced that God is real by making one leg grow longer than the other on a man. They actually “show” this on camera, but like much of the movie, it’s a gag, and the man knows he’s not actually making this guy’s leg grow longer. And that’s not how people are saved. They are brought to repentance (2 Tim 2:25) and faith in Christ by His free gift of grace (Eph 2:8-9). People in Jesus’ day saw His many miracles, but in the end, these same many would turn away from Him forever (John 6:66). Miracles were not enough to save them. It takes the Word of God and the Spirit of God to birth a child of God (John 3:3-7; Eph 2:1-4).

No Repentance

Many people today on the street today would tell you they believe in Jesus, but they bear no fruits proving they’re abiding in Christ (John 15). They lack love for others, revealing they are not Jesus’ disciples (John 13:34-35; 1 John). Clearly the makers of this film (not counting the Holy Spirit) would rather not mention God’s coming judgment and mankind’s need for repentance. Instead, they reason, why not primarily focus on God’s love for people and people’s experiences. One hidden danger is that this movie actually promotes false teachers and dangerous ministries and people’s experiences to validate whether something is true or not. They do this rather than warn people as we’re commanded to about false teachers (Rom 16:17-28) to repent or perish (Luke 13:3-5).

Hidden Dangers

They believe this documentary is an accurate portrait of the Holy Spirits work, but that is something they cannot really know. These people’s experiences seem harmless enough but that misleads others who might try to experience the same thing. Yes, there are wonderful stories where people’s lives have dramatically changed, but God is more interested in our holiness than our healthiness. The true danger of these “Ghost” movies is that people who know little about the Bible will be miss-lead into thinking this stuff is in the Bible. People who may not have even been associated with false teaching before are being lumped together and they see no problem with that.

Personal Experience

In the final analysis, they are validating error and exhibiting demonic manifestations and attributing that to the Holy Spirit. That is not a safe thing to do. And clearly, this is not from God the Holy Spirit. Sin is very rarely mentioned and it’s never even explained, nor is the penalty of our sins talked about and the need for forgiveness (1 John 1:8-10). They are putting their trust in their personal experiences and not putting their trust in Christ. They actually put their experiences above Scripture in some cases.  All of the essentials in the gospel are never mentioned, and God’s mercy is not relevant until God’s wrath is revealed, so to be silent about it is a sin of omission and it is only half the gospel (if that), which is no gospel at all!

The Work of Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is supposed to bring conviction to sinners, but in these movies, the Holy Spirit apparently does other things too. We dare not attempt to speak for God or for the Holy Spirit Who is God. We come near to blaspheming the Holy Spirit when we believe we speak for Him. We cannot God’s secret council. What is not revealed in the Bible is none of our business. God has spoken already, once and for all (Heb 1:1-2; Jude 1:3), so let us not be in danger of judgment before God in presuming to speak for the Spirit of God. The only things the Holy Spirit has told me is to repent and believe…but never has He told me to go and make a movie. These movie makers may indeed have found god after all…but it’s the little “g” god; the god of this world who has blinded their minds as well as the world’s (2 Cor 4:3-4).

Conclusion

If you haven’t trusted in Christ yet, you are not His disciple and you do not have the Holly Spirit. Even worse, you are one breath, one heartbeat…one accident away from eternity when it will be too late to repent. Right now is best of days to believe (2 Cor 6:2) because tomorrow is no guarantee for any of us. If Jesus Christ came today, read your fate (Matt 7:21-23). This is why I plead with you as you read this right now, repent today. Put your trust in Jesus Christ. If not, you will face God’s judgment after death guaranteed (Heb 9:27) or at Jesus Christ’s appearance (Rev 20:12-15), which could happen at any moment.
