The topic of wisdom comes up over and over again throughout the pages of Scripture. One whole book (Proverbs) seems devoted to the topic and many verses in Proverbs have the topic of wisdom (often contrasted with foolishness). Wisdom seems hard to obtain. Wisdom in general seems to bring our minds to someone with much experience or expertise in an area or someone who makes good judgments. Wisdom is different than having knowledge. Knowledge is defined as having information through experience, reasoning or acquaintance. Whereas wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true. Consider these verses on wisdom.
Psalms 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!”
Verses About The Fear of the Lord and Wisdom
Job 28:28 And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Important Verses on Wisdom
Psalms 107:43 Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.
Ecclesiastes 2:26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Ecclesiastes 7:12 For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
1 Corinthians 1:19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.
1 Corinthians 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Ephesians 5:15-17 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
James 3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
Verses on Wisdom from the Book of Proverbs
Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 10:13 On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks sense.
Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Proverbs 13:1 A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
Proverbs 16:16 How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
God wants us to have more than knowledge about Him. He wants us to have wisdom. Scripture tells us that knowing the facts is not enough. At one point in the New Testament, James says (2:19) “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” Simply put, it is not enough to know the facts but we all have a choice to make about God and believing in His word. I pray that you gain wisdom and understanding as you search for the truth about Jesus Christ. Meditate on His word today.
