Parents never give up on their children, no matter what, so here are 7 prayers that you can pray for your adult children.

Prayer of Protection

When we pray for our children, we need to be specific and to pray for their protection. Pray for their protection from the enemy or the god of this world (2 Cor 4:4), and against those who still are held captive and may try to bring our children back into the world, so pray this way: Father God, please help our children stay connected with You in prayer and in the Word so that they might find the protection that only You can offer and to help them avoid the places, people, and temptations that might try to bring them back into the darkness. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ…amen.

Prayer of Provision

God my Father, please help our children be able to meet their needs and how to share what they have so that you would bless them. God, today there are so many things that can pull on our children away from You and draw their resources away from what You desire they use them for. Help them to prioritize their life and the basic necessities of life so that they can provide for themselves and their family. God, I pray this in the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Prayer of Thankfulness

Father God, I know our children are a gift from you and that we are never done parenting, even after they’ve left our homes, but now that they’ve started a life on their own, I want to thank you for them as our children are such a great blessing. I ask you to bless them and move them to bless others whom they come into contact with. It is with a thankful heart I praise you for giving us these children and now give us the wisdom to know when to and when not to offer advice, but we always pray for them that you would bless them, and in Jesus’ precious name I pray…amen.

Prayer for Perseverance

Lord God, my Father, I pray for my children that they are able to persevere in this troubled world…a world that is constantly trying to drag them down, and is calling them into sinful practices. I pray that Your Spirit will enable them to overcome the Evil One and the strong temptations that they will face in this life, and that you might sanctify them by your truth, and that truth is found in Your Word, the Bible. Please help them when they are not able to help themselves to endure to the end, and in Jesus’ holy name I pray…amen.

Prayer for Yielded-ness

Oh Father God, I pray for my children when the world begins to draw them into things that are not godly but destructive. I cannot always be with them, but You promise to be with them and never leave them or forsake them. Please help them yield to Your Spirit so that they might be convicted of sin and that You would bring them to confession and repentance when they do sin, and that they might remember the things they’ve been taught in Your Word. Your Word and Your Spirit alone can help them since we cannot always be with them. I pray for your Spirit to help them yield to whatever is Your will in their life and in Jesus’ precious name I pray, amen.

Prayer for Perspective

Father God, the world so wants to change our perspective into one of instant gratification and not one that looks at the eternal perspective. Help our children to have a biblical perspective on everything they face in life; the trials are for their benefit; the sorrows for their focus on you; and the joys that come from You, such a good God. Help them to see things as you do…through the eyes of Christ, so that they will reflect upon what life is all about and to be reminded of their true purpose in life…to glorify You and to enjoy You for all time…and in the name of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, I pray, amen.

Prayer for Godly Character

Father God, You are using Your Spirit and Your Word to shape us and mold us into the image of Christ. I pray you also help our children be renewed in their minds by Your Spirit and that they develop godly character by the things they face in life; allow Your Spirit to help them make choices that are good and godly, and that their perspective is filtered through the Word of God by the Spirit of God and for the glory of God, and in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Conclusion

One thing I’ve learned is that we must pray for our children. If we don’t pray for our children, it shows we don’t care for our children. Prayer is a strong refuge for us and for our children. Pray that they keep in touch with the Word of God, and in prayer, and by the Spirit of God, so that they might become the children of God You desire. They, like we, need Your help in this life and we cannot do much without prayer. Pray for your children; love your children; and never give up on your children, knowing that even if they forsake Him, He will never, ever forsake them or leave them (Heb 13:5). Every parent needs to pray for their children because this world is so full of evil. God will use your prayers as a means to His end…and one that can help them in their times of need; in their times of sorrow; and in their times of temptation. It’s a much different world for our children than it was when we were growing up. There is more sin; there is greater temptation, and there is more evil in society than it seems it was in our day. All the more reason to pray for your children, each and every day.
