15 Awesome Christian Worship Songs

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

Worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth – this is what we are called to do.  What better way to worship the Lord but for an awesome Christian worship song? There are so many good ones; some that were written years ago and others that have been given as a “new song” just recently.  Generally we sing worship songs with fellow believers during church services, but I have been known to sing them throughout the day and while traveling.  I choose worship songs based upon the message that they proclaim.  The lyrics must be easily understood and God-honoring.  This is a singing kind of article so I have included a video of each of my picks on my YouTube page at Pam’s Favorite Videos.  Join me as I worship the Lord with these fifteen awesome Christian Worship songs.

Featured Song:

Your Great Name(Krissy Nordhoff and Michael Neale) This is a relatively new song released by Natalie Grant on her album “Love Revolution”. It speaks about how Jesus is in everything. It is one of those songs that you feel like you can sing out loud and strong from a mountaintop. It is a testimony of how everything is done at the sound of the great name of Jesus. I found a great video with Natalie, Krissy and Michael. They speak of what the song means to them. It is so wonderful when we learn the story behind the song. Take a look below. And don’t forget to view the video in the upper right of this page to hear Natalie sing this song  in its entirety. The video has lyrics so you can sing along too

Change My Heart O God (Eddie Espinosa)

This is a lovely slow praiseful song that is popular in may worship sets. Based upon Isaiah 64:8, the lyrics are:

Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like You

You are the potter
I am the clay
Mold me and make me
This is what I pray

Days of Elijah (Robin Mark)

Sample Lyrics:

These are the days of Elijah,
Declaring the word of the Lord:
And these are the days of Your servant Moses,
Righteousness being restored.
And though these are days of great trial,
Of famine and darkness and sword,
Still, we are the voice in the desert crying
‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord!’

Behold He comes riding on the clouds,
Shining like the sun at the trumpet call;
Lift your voice, it’s the year of jubilee,
And out of Zion’s hill salvation comes.

Give Me Jesus (Fernando Ortega)

I love this song as sung by Jeremy Camp with his wife singing backup with her angelic voice.  So simple, so lovely, so true!

Sample Lyrics:

In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise, give me Jesus

Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus,
You can have all this world,
But give me Jesus

Give Thanks (Don Moen)

A song that has been around for many years, this one is popular in just about any church. It has simple lyrics that repeat often.

Sample Lyrics:

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He’s give Jesus Christ, His Son
(repeat)

And now let the weak say “I am strong”
Let the poor say, “I am rich”
Because of what the Lord has done for us
(repeat)
(repeat from top)

God of This City (Bluetree)

And evangelistic song to help us reflect upon our commission – to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone, starting in our own city!

Sample Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
You’re the God of this City
You’re the King of these people
You’re the Lord of this nation
You are

[Verse 2]
You’re the Light in this darkness
You’re the Hope to the hopeless
You’re the Peace to the restless
You are

There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God

[Chorus]
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City
Greater thing have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this City

God With Us (Mercy Me)

The album on which this song was released is based upon Psalms 103:1-5. This song is easy to lead and follow.  As with most of the songs released by Mercy Me, these lyrics are powerful.  I list them all below.

Sample Lyrics:

Who are we— that You would be mindful of us?
What do You see— that’s worth looking our way?
We are free— in ways that we never should be.
Sweet release— from the grip of these chains.

Like hinges straining from the weight,
My heart no longer can keep from singing.

All that is within me cries
For You alone be glorified:
Emmanuel, God with us.

My heart sings a brand new song.
The debt is paid, these chains are gone.
Emmanuel, God with us.

Such a tiny offering
Compared to Calvary;
Nevertheless,
We lay it at Your feet.

Such a tiny offering
Compared to Calvary;
Nevertheless,
We lay this at Your feet.

All that is within me cries
For You alone be glorified:
Emmanuel, God with us.

My heart sings a brand new song.
My debt is paid, these chains are gone.
Emmanuel, God with us.

He is Exalted (Twila Paris)

Released a number of years ago, this lovely worshipful song is very relevant and loved today.

Sample Lyrics:

He is exalted the King is exalted on High
I will praise You
He is exalted forever exalted
And I will praise His name

He is exalted the King is exalted on High
I will praise Him
He is exalted forever exalted
And I will praise His name

He is the Lord
Forever His truth shall reign
Heaven and Earth
Rejoice in His holy name
He is exalted the King is exalted on high

He is exalted the King is exalted on high

Here I Am to Worship (Tim Hughes)

Although this song was written by Tim Hughes, I believe it was made popular by Michael W. Smith when he released it on his 2002 “Worship Again” album.  Michael has been writing worship songs since 1981 when he started writing for Meadowgreen Music.  In 1982 he became Amy Grant’s keyboardist for her band.  The next year he began releasing his solo music [1]. I also believe that Michael W. Smith, who has been releasing music for more than 25 years, is one of the most recognized names in Christian music.  Take a couple minutes right now and join in worship.  You can sing along with the video below.

How Great is Our God (Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and Ed Cash)

A few years ago I was asked to sing at a community ladies’ lunch.  This was one of the songs that I sang.  I led the ladies in worship and since most were older ladies, I actually taught them this one. They did well to sing along.  I was blessed to have my daughter with me to play the keyboard and sing backup.  What a fond memory of sweet fellowship with the ladies and my daughter who remains a lovely young lady and talented musician.  I confess that Chris Tomlin is my favorite worship leader at this season of my life.  I hope you take time to view the video and sing along.  You can find it on my YouTube page.

Lead Me to the Cross (Brooke Fraser)

This is a song that was written by Brooke Fraser of Hillsong.  I believe the most popular version of it is sung by Chris and Conrad.  Here are some lyrics:

Sample Lyrics:

Savior I come
Quiet my soul remember
Redemptions hill
Where Your blood was spilled
For my ransom
Everything I once held dear
I count it all as lost

Lead me to the cross
Where Your love poured out
Bring me to my knees
Lord I lay me down
Rid me of myself
I belong to You
Lead me, lead me to the cross

You were as I
Tempted and trialed
You are
Te word became flesh
Bore my sin and death
Now you’re risen

To your heart
To your heart
Lead me to your heart
Lead me to your heart

Lord I Lift Your Name on High (Rick Founds)

When I first started leading worship this was one of our church’s favorites.  I especially like how The Martins sing this one but many other artists have recorded it too. It is very repetitive and can go on for quite some time.

Sample Lyrics:

(Verse)
Lord, I lift Your name on high
Lord, I love to sing Your praises
I’m so glad You’re in my life
I’m so glad You came to save us

(Chorus)
You came from heaven to earth
To show the way
From the earth to the cross
My debt to pay
From the cross to the grave
From the grave to the sky
Lord, I lift Your name on high

Repeat Verse

Repeat Chorus

Repeat Chorus

Lord, I lift Your name on high…

Mighty to Save (Rueben Morgan and Ben Fielding)

This is perhaps my favorite worship song at the time of this writing.  It is a powerful picture of the strength and might of our Savior!  Here are the lyrics:

Sample Lyrics:

Everyone needs compassion
Love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Saviour
The hope of nations

Saviour
He can move the mountains
For my God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender

Shine Your light and
Let the whole world see
We’re singing
For the glory of the risen King

Revelation Song (Jeannie Lee Riddles)

First released by Kari Jobe, this one was made popular by Phillips, Craig and Dean.  The title speaks for itself as it is right out of the pages of the Bible.  Take a look at the lyrics:

Sample Lyrics:

Worthy is the, Lamb who was slain
Holy, Holy, is He
Sing a new song, to him who sits on
Heaven’s mercy seat
[2X]

Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You

Clothed in rainbows, of living color
Flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder
Blessing and honor, strength and glory and power be
to You the only wise King

Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder
At the mention of your name
Jesus your name is power
Breath, and living water
Such a marvelous mystery
Yeah…

Holy, Holy, Holy
Is the Lord God Almighty
Who was, and is, and is to come, yeah
With all creation I sing
Praise to the King of Kings
You are my everything
And I will adore You
[3X]

Wonderful, Merciful Savior (Eric Wise and Dawn Rogers)

I have sung this one for special music a few times but find it is easy to follow and makes a great addition to your worship set.  A lovely song about the name above all names.

Sample Lyrics:

Wonderful merciiful Savior
Precious redeemer and friend
Who would have thought that a lamb could
Rescue the souls of men, Oh You rescue the souls of men

Counselor, comforter, keeper
Spirit we long to embrace
You offer hope when our hearts have
Hopelessly lost the way, Oh we hopelessly lost the way

You are the One that we praise
You are the One we adore
You give the healing and grace our
Hearts always hunger for, Oh our hearts always hunger for

Almighty infinite father
Faithfully loving Your own
Herein our weakness You find us
Falling before Your throne, Oh we’re falling before Your throne
