10 Amazing Songs About Jesus

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

Of all the Christian songs available today, I think perhaps there are more with the name of Jesus in them than any other. Perhaps it is because when you love someone it is easy to have a song in your heart about them. Here are just 10 amazing songs about Jesus, maybe one of your favorites is on the list.

Featured Song: Jesus is All the World to Me I feature this great hymn of faith because of all the songs about Jesus, I believe this is one that says so much in the lyrics. Put it together with a great choir singing it in parts and you have a lovely, lovely melody to the Lord. It never gets old even though it has been around since 1904 when Will Lamartine Thompson wrote it. I love his story too. He began writing secular music and had trouble getting someone to sell it for him, then after attending a D.L. Moody evangelistic meeting in the late 1800s he was convicted to devote his talent to writing Christian music – his first Christian hymn was “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling”. D.L. Moody used that hymn at almost every evangelistic meeting since. Another interesting note about Will, he was known to load a piano into a horse drawn wagon to allow people in small towns throughout Ohio to hear good music.[1] Enjoy the video in the upper right of this page as the choir sings this lovely hymn.

More Hymns

I’d Rather Have Jesus (Rhea F. Miller & George Beverly Shea)

I will let the video speak for this one. It is a warm story from the one who wrote the melody to this lovely poem. You might also recognize his voice. I love those alto voices of the lead singers in the video.

My Jesus, I Love Thee (Williams R. Featherston & Adoniram J. Gordon)

Did you know that the words to this lovely hymn were written by a sixteen year old? I learned that from the cyberhymnal.org site. You can read more about this hymn here: My Jesus. Here are the lyrics:

Lyrics:

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine;
For Thee all the follies of sin I resign.
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I love Thee because Thou has first loved me,
And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree.
I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I’ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death,
And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath;
And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow,
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight,
I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow;
If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus (Joseph M. Scriven & Charles Crozat Converse)

This is another one of my favorites to do as special music. I especially like a rendition that Selah’s Nicole Sponberg sings as part of a medley with “Be Still My Soul”. I have found video for you to enjoy:

Contemporary Songs & Choruses

Come to Jesus (Chris Rice)

This is one that I had to sing about 50 times before I could ever perform it for special music because every time I would get to the verse about “cry to Jesus”, that is exactly what I would do. Here is a video for you, sung by the writer of this lovely newer song.

Give Me Jesus (Fernando Ortega)

This song was written by the wonderful worship leader Fernando Ortega, yet it was made popular by Jeremy Camp. On a hard day it is so wonderful to meditate upon the lyrics of this song because it reminds me that this world is not my home and one day I will look into the face of my Jesus.

Lyrics:

In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise
In the morning, when I rise, give me Jesus

Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus,
You can have all this world,
But give me Jesus

When I am alone
When I am alone
When I am alone, give me Jesus

Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus,
You can have all this world,
But give me Jesus

When I come to die
When I come to die
When I come to die, give me Jesus

Give me Jesus,
Give me Jesus,
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
You can have all this world,
But give me Jesus

Shine, Jesus, Shine (Graham Kendrick)

Songs About JesusThis is an older song, but I have a story to share about it. I have had the pleasure of being a member of several choirs in my life. Sometimes choir practice is held after a long day and learning parts can be trying. One such evening we had been practicing for a cantata and it was time to run through the worship songs for the upcoming Sunday. Clearly our choir director was beat. I remember getting to the chorus of “Shine, Jesus, Shine” and he held his hands up and danced swaying back and forth like a child with a big smile on his face as we sang. Since that time I always remember that dear brother when I even hear this song. Such sweet memories of a church family that is far from us now, but still in our heart. Here is a video for you to enjoy led by Graham with Hillsong, the group that popularized the song.

Children’s Songs

Jesus Loves Even Me (Philip P. Bliss)

I list it as a children’s song, but truly it applies to everyone – Jesus loves even me!

Lyrics:

I am so glad that our Father in Heav’n
Tells of His love in the Book He has giv’n;
Wonderful things in the Bible I see,
This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me.

Refrain:
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.

Oh, if there’s only one song I can sing,
When in His beauty I see the great King,
This shall my song through eternity be,
“Oh, what a wonder that Jesus loves me!”

Jesus loves me, and I know I love Him;
Love brought Him down my poor soul to redeem;
Yes, it was love made Him die on the tree;
Oh, I am certain that Jesus loves me!

If one should ask of me, how can I tell?
Glory to Jesus, I know very well!
God’s Holy Spirit with mine doth agree,
Constantly witnessing Jesus loves me.

In this assurance I find sweetest rest,
Trusting in Jesus, I know I am blest;
Satan, dismayed, from my soul now doth flee,
When I just tell him that Jesus loves me.

Jesus Loves Me (Anna B. Warner)

For Christian parents, I think this is the first song they should teach to their children. How else can a child grow to love Jesus unless they are exposed to Him when they “sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 6:7). Here is a video sung by the Cedarmont Kids, enjoy the Veggie Tales too.

Jesus Loves the Little Children (Clare Herbert Woolston & George F. Root)

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. (Mark 10:13-15)

Lyrics:

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

Alternate Refrain:

Jesus died for all the children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in His sight,
Jesus died for all the children of the world.

Jesus calls the children dear,
Come to me and never fear,
For I love the little children of the world;
I will take you by the hand,
Lead you to the better land,
For I love the little children of the world.

Refrain

Jesus is the Shepherd true,
And He’ll always stand by you,
For He loves the little children of the world;
He’s a Savior great and strong,
And He’ll shield you from the wrong,
For He loves the little children of the world.

Refrain

I am coming, Lord, to Thee,
And Your soldier I will be,
For You love the little children of the world;
And Your cross I’ll always bear,
And for You I’ll do and dare,
For You love the little children of the world.

Refrain
